Artificial Scape is inspired by the peaceful and harmonious moments of nature and asks the audience to take pause and observe these moments. The experience of nature is brought indoors through audience interaction with water, object, and space – both physical and virtual.
As a collective of artists, designers and craftspeople, we are interested in creating experiences using both craft materials and digital mediums. The installation consists of various interactive parts. In one, a series of ceramic units is arranged on a custom-built table to loosely mimic a mountain range. The audience activates these units by pouring water in them. The second part is material exploration. We tested burnout materials in ceramics and different firing temperatures to highlight the properties of water. Material samples will be on display for the audience to hold and observe. The final part is accessed through the audience’s phones. Through scanning a QR code, the audience enters a virtual landscape and experiences another dimension of Artificial Scape.
Artificial Scape compels the audience to have an active experience of these created landscapes, contrasting the passive experience we too often have in real nature.
