Homology, a biology terminology, describes the existence of shared ancestry between a pair of structures or genes in different taxa.
Embedding the concept into cultural context, the East and the West share the same ancestry: Mother Nature. Yet, they act differently in values, behaviour, and customs. With Mother Nature, however, how do two distinct cultures react?
‘Homology’ takes inspiration from the immigration journey between two cultures, and attempts to translate them into functional furniture pieces. It is a dialog between Chinese Yin Yang and Canadian appreciation of wild nature; it is a discussion between two cultures holding a different philosophy of life.
Topher Kong‘s practice demonstrates an interest in bridging art and design. He mainly communicates by creating hybrid forms of art and design that synchronize the physical and the emotional in its stages and states.
