Julia Jamrozik, Coryn Kempster
Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster are Canadian designers and artists who endeavour to create spaces, objects, and situations that interrupt the ordinary in a critically engaging and playful way.
In 2016 they installed a public artwork entitled ‘Full Circle’ on a vacant lot in Buffalo, NY. The project started with a familiar construct, the playground swing-set, and transformed it, twisting the typical experience by organizing the seats in a circle instead of a line to provide opportunities for confrontation and dialogue. No longer partaking in parallel movement as on a typical swing-set, the users of ‘Full Circle’ were invited to join a playful conversation.
Inspired by this past work, they will install ‘Hookup’, which similarly plays with ones expectations of a typical swing-set, this time by keeping all the swings in a row, but linking each seat to it’s neighbour. In this way, the movement of any one participant will directly affect all the others, setting up a new set of confrontations, collaborations and dialogues.
In addition to their art and design practice (www.ck-jj.com), Julia is an Assistant Professor, and Coryn is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University at Buffalo SUNY.
Full Circle was commissioned by CEPA Gallery and C.S.1 Curatorial Projects
