Stephanie Flowers

Description

Stephanie Flowers’ work is influenced by the language and representations of anatomy, biology, and medical imagining. In her newest sculptural installation, she uses the technique of slip-casting ceramics to develop a study of abstract forms that reflect the human body as a changing landscape. Through the material exploration of porcelain and colour, she examines metaphors between the body, its fragility, and plasticity. By altering the replicating process with each use, she considers how the forms change by natural and forced deterioration — over time, revealing more leaks, seam lines, and ‘flaws’. The fleshy colour palette built up in various intensities, highlights porcelain’s traditionally translucent quality as a characteristic closely resembling the human body and it’s thin boundary between interior and exterior space. Together, the final forms create a visual catalogue of specimens and the experience that consider questions surrounding the body’s vulnerability, and capacity to heal.
