Description

Memory Cloud Apparatus is a representation of a possible future where our memories are stored in virtual space, to be accessed by those closest to us in a very experiential way. It is also a discussion as to whom has access to such ‘data,’ and the implications of having a more complex digital self.

Throughout the workshop, participants are guided through a narrated experience, whereby they eventually come into contact with the Memory Cloud Apparatus: a device that provides you with a physical interface to another person’s collected memories; in essence giving access to another’s ‘virtual self.’ Participants then create ‘memory maps,’ fleshing out the various physical and non-physical elements encountered along the narrated journey. When displayed side-by-side, these maps act as testament to the plurality of futures and the potential truths found in each individual interpretation of the same constructed experience. The Memory Cloud Apparatus hopes to explore how people cope with the idea of memory loss, and the void that is left behind when that person no longer exists.

In acting out this future potential, an alternate reality takes shape that allows one to explore the space of a possible future and to fantasize around such alternatives. The main aim of the experience is to understand the future as a tangible construct that is shaped and created in the present, and is not a distant and impersonal entity to be decided on by others.
