18 Rack House Mews
Across many cultures the totem is an age old form. They are a marker of human existence and life. They are a symbol of a society’s presence on the earth. They are a connecting rod between the earth and the sky, between the physical and the spiritual. These new incarnations bring that power to the present. They hold the meaning that totems have always held and deliver it into our modern lives.
This is the largest arrangement of Day’s Series 5 Totems to date. Numbering thirty and spread across the top of two narrow plinths, they not only reach up to the sky but reach out to each other. With their masses and voids, blacks and whites, shadows and spaces, they vibrate and move as a single body. Each totem is turned and painted by hand.
