Description

TAC, or Total Allowable Catch, refers to a catch limit set for a particular fishery. This structure is designed to organize and hold just the right amount of typical landing strip clutter— coat, hat, scarf, mail and keys— while providing a place to sit and store a pair of shoes. Form follows function, keeping this design paired-down and straightforward to use. Woven elements echo patterns found in the traditional fishery and the hand-rubbed solid wood adds a luxurious quality.

This piece was designed and made by Wooden Leg Studio in St. John’s, Newfoundland for the Toronto Design Offsite Festival. The design was heavily influenced by a variety of considerations such as local culture, on site assembly, finished weight, shipping, and ascetics. The challenge was to reflect on each constraint and make a piece that feels hand-made and heirloom-quality. As a designer/ maker working and living in Canada’s most easterly city, it felt important to travel the 3224km to Toronto and participate in the current design conversation.
