Description

Useful/ Useless is an exploration of material and form. The work embraces spalted timbers harvested from a decomposing Sugar Maple tree. Black veining and shades of pink, tan, and peach drift around each sculpture as each piece of raw wood reveals secrets as it is formed.

The 5 pieces in the collection are comprised of 2-4 volumes each. These volumes combine to create objects that are varied in shape but single in minimal form. The work seeks to explore the art of proportion as well as the beauty of natural chaos. Relying largely on the process of turning on a lathe, the volumes are all symmetrical and give a sense of balance and uniformity. Yet the volumes are also combined in precarious arrangements, and embody the spirit of the wild veining in the material.

These sculptures explore the contemporary furniture climate and the modern maker’s ability to produce things that are useful and also useless. As high craft becomes a fetishized process, contemporary builders utilize specialized techniques to create things to which people are drawn. But is there a purpose behind the creations? Is contemporary furniture art or craft? And at what point does minimalism loose function and facility?

Useful/ Useless dives deep into the joys of making things: free form sculpture resting on the basic rules of design. This exhibition represents one maker’s rejection of functional form, and a whole hearted love of craft exploration.
