‘Work/Life’ is an exhibition that explores fresh and original housewares and working products for contemporary life, showcasing the work of 10 Canadian designers and studios: Allstudio, Area 91, Dear Human, F&Y, Char Kennedy, Jacob Mailman, Mercury Bureau, MPGMB, Geof Ramsay, Stewart Shum and Ange-line Tetrault.
Half of the world’s population now lives in urban centres where real estate is expensive and space is hard to come by. In Toronto alone, average condo sizes have shrunk by over 100 square feet over the last ten years. This has resulted in a trend towards making small spaces more livable and efficient. At the same time, the nature of work has changed drastically. We no longer work 9-5 in standard office spaces. For the knowledge industry, co-working spaces and home offices have proliferated. The boundaries between work, home, and “life” are hard to define.
‘Work/Life’ is a signature exhibition organized by the Toronto Design Offsite Festival in partnership with Umbra. A jury will recognize best-in-show with a Best Product award, and a cash prize. Best-in-show jurors include Laura Carwardine (Product + CMF Designer, Umbra), Mia Nielsen (Curator and Head of Cultural Programming, Drake Hotel Properties), Andrew Sardone (Editorial Director, Globe Style, The Globe and Mail), and Deborah Wang (Artistic Director, Toronto Design Offsite Festival). Visitors to the exhibition will be able to cast their vote to award Fan Favourite.
