Sediment presents books, artist books, book works and custom support structures. The exhibition came together from a call for submissions that requested two types of participation: 1) the submission of a book/artist book/book work along with a written description of its optimal means of support and 2) an expression of interest in building a support structure in response to a submitted book and its description.
As a result of this call for submissions, seven book-support pairs have been established, each bringing together the efforts of two individuals. A written proposal for a support structure was also received and forms the basis of an exhibition-scale support structure conceived, built and designed by two artists. This large structure, functioning somewhere between sculpture and exhibition design, will integrate with and incorporate the seven book-support pairs as well as provide varying degrees of support for four additional books with indirect support descriptions.
Sediment explores the range, conditions and actualizations of support: how words contain and transmit meaning, how a text is shaped and adopted by particular formats and how form and blatant materiality contribute to the framing of experience through the interrelation of structure, surface, image and object.
